“Kaira” - Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté
The Kora is a really lovely instrument, and Toumani Diabaté one of its masters.
I’ve posted about Ali Farka Touré’s son before, but here’s the master himself.
The whole album is full of great grooves, it’s basically just these two masters jamming with each other the whole time.
“Spill the Wine” - Eric Burdon & War
This video makes me wonder two things. 1) Was Eric Burdon the Björk of the 70s? and 2) how hard was the director of this video trying not to show the white guy with an afro and apparently no purpose?
“Protect Ya Neck” - El Michels Affair
What was that you said? That I wasn’t posting enough funk/soul covers of the Wu Tang Clan? Well, problem solved.
You should check out the shimmy shimmy ya cover too, it features kids singing the chorus. Amazing.
“Journey in Satchidananda” - Alice Coltrane
Despite being a big Coltrane fan, I’d never read much about him, and I had no idea that his wife made amazing music like this track. Hat tip to Gilles Peterson for hipping me to Alice Coltrane.
“Paranoid Android” - Brad Mehldau
“Valley of Life” - McCoy Tyner
This fits in really well with a lot of the minimal music I’ve been listening to lately, and bridges the gap into the jazz world as well; McCoy Tyner was one of Coltrane’s favorite pianists.

“Fanta” - Coulibaly Tidiani et l’authentique Dafra Star de Bobo Dioulasso
African guitar sounds just makes me so damn happy.

“Cars” - Cookin’ on 3 Burners
A nifty breakbeat cover of the Gary Numan classic that sadly lacks the wonderfully 80’s video of the original.
“New York Counterpoint - Fast” - Steve Reich
A lovely modern fugue. When the two main voices come together at 3:30, I get chills down my spine.
